A magical holiday house just outside Paarl

We just returned from a magical few days at our favourite holiday house, Denneboom (@denneboompaarl). It’s our fifth visit and honestly, every time we go I love it more.

As soon as we arrive, I take in a big lungful of the sun-warmed air and I can feel myself unwind… Throw in an endless sky, amazing light, an always-cool splash pool and the comfiest loungers I’ve ever had the pleasure of lying down reading on, and you have a delicious recipe.

Except it’s much better than that. Denneboom is a vineyard, olive farm and wildlife sanctuary. There are zebra, wildebeest, springbok and eland roaming wild (and occasionally popping in for a drink of water or to sit in the shade by the picnic table – swipe to take a look!) You can go for a before-dinner stroll and see a herd of zebra. The kids set off on a morning walk by themselves and returned full of stories about springbok and wildebeest they’d seen. They made potions of sticks and leaves and mud and sun-bleached bones. They ran wild.

And I watched them, and joined in, and read, and coloured, and stuck stickers, and built and flew a kite (more on that soon!)

It was glorious. If you need a getaway that’s close to Cape Town but a million miles from real life, check out @denneboompaarl. Stay in Shepherd or Stable cottage (both are fabulous). Sip on their excellent rose while watching wild animals *from your swimming pool*. And thank your lucky stars you get to live in South Africa 💫
(That’s what I did, anyway!)
