‘Celebrate everything’ is one of my core life beliefs, I think.
When I was in my second year of college, I wrote a little book called ‘Everything is more fun in a prom dress’. It was an inside look at college life, handwritten (foolishly) and inset into beautifully crafted/collaged/painted/found art borders. *So* fun to make.
It was a semester-long project, in which I extolled the virtues of wearing prom dresses to class, for walks to the market, and in everyday life… Along with all the very heartfelt angst of a 20-year-old college student.
At the end of the semester, I stuck all the pages on the walls of the Art House lounge (where I lived) and invited everyone to come over for cake, ideally dressed in prom dresses (I am nothing if not consistent). I was working at the theatre Costume Shop at the time, and my lovely boss Ginny gifted me this 1940s wonder of a dress for the occasion… It is an absolute slice of joy to wear.
And yet somehow, despite my deep belief in lighting the scented candles and using the vintage crockery and wearing the fabulous diamanté fascinators, I have not worn this dress in 20 years!
The lovely @riekielouise turning 50 last week was the perfect occasion, and now I’m determined to have it in my more-frequent rotation.
It’s true. Everything *is* more fun in a prom dress!
