In early September, a friend told me she’d eaten at @wolfgat, and my immediate response was: “what?! How did you get in?”
It was recently voted Africa’s Best Restaurant, and is booked up for months. She told me to try my luck, and we booked for this past Saturday. Said friend (@amandaabroad) described their meal as an “emotional experience” and I didn’t know what she meant until we ate there.
It was breathtaking. Incandescent. Extraordinary. Pick the biggest adjective you have, and that won’t sum up the experience. I still can’t quite put my finger on what made it so special… It’s partly the intimate setting (max 20 people per meal, in a lamp lit room on the edge of the ocean). Partly the food itself: freshly foraged and so beautifully prepared (as you can see from the pic I stole from @mark_peddle). But it’s more than that – there is something intangibly wonderful about the love and care that chef @kobusvdmerwe and his team pour into every plate, something so thrilling about having your dish and the wine pairing explained by the chef himself, something so magical about being there as the menu and the meal unfolds… It was one slice of joy after another, for an entire evening. I felt blissed out, deeply lucky, almost euphoric.
I am not often at a loss for words, but I find myself at one here. If it is at all possible, book yourself a table at @wolfgat and experience it for yourself… You might be lucky enough to experience the wonder in person 💫
A breathtaking meal
