It has been profoundly weird to launch a book about joy while grieving.
It has also been oddly helpful.
Both because of the distraction – sequins and book launches and articles and podcast interviews – and because of the subject matter.
Glimmers aren’t for the days when life is full of sunshine and cupcakes – they’re not necessary on those days. Glimmers are for when life is hard, and dark, and you need to spot a chink of lightness as a lifeline: a promise that it won’t always be this hard.
I’ve tried to bring this awareness into all the events and interviews and articles I’ve worked on, because I think it’s so important to highlight that glimmers aren’t something light and fluffy. They’re a mental health coping mechanism.
If life feels hard right now: I see you. And also:
Have you noticed the way the sun slants through the leaves? The satisfying crunch of biting into an apple? The deep peace of a hug with someone you love? Me too.
I’ll be talking about all this – and more – on Saturday at Exclusive Books Constantia at 11am, and I’d love it if you’d join me. Let’s take some time out for glimmers. God knows we all need it!
