Mother’s Day without a mom

Mother's Day without a mom

It’s the most triggering time of the year… ❤️‍🩹

I went to the shops today, to buy a sweater! Exclamation intended, because it’s the first clothing I’ve bought this year, and I got the *most* beautiful sweater and upgraded my scarf game with literally the softest and beautifullest scarf I have ever seen (my kids are delighted they get my old one).

But oh! The shops in May. It’s a minefield of soppy mom quotes and pictures of moms and daughters (why always daughters?!) and triggering reminders that I do not now and never will have a mom again. Mother’s Day without a mom.

Bleurgh.

I am very aware that I have it better than many, because I’m also a mom myself – so I *love* some aspects of Mother’s Day. My favourite breakfast! (Choc chip flapjacks with berries.) My favourite dinner! (Homemade lasagne.) Getting to do whatever I want all day! (Reading and gardening.)

And yet. And yet.

So what to do? In previous years, I have sucked it up and gone to shops, read newspapers, ingested ads on social media. This year I’m steering clear of the shops for a few weeks (easy to do). Not looking at ads of any description (fairly easy to do). Choosing not to stick my finger into the painful open plug of motherlessness.

And emerging on the other side a little stronger and wiser and more used to life without a mom (I hope).
