Can we talk about the power of cake? 🍰
(And how much you wish you were at my house right now!)
I’ve always loved baking. My mom and I used to bake together all the time, and when I went to college baking cakes became my language of love… American boxed cake mix made it a lot easier 😉
I have a distinct memory of being out at a bar when I was in my early 20s, and telling my friends I was desperate for tea and cake… so we went home and baked a chocolate cake at 1am. My parents must have been very confused when the scent of chocolate cake wafted into their dreams!
Type 1 diabetes has made my cake consumption more considered… If I’m going to eat a slice of cake, it has to be jab-worthy (worth injecting for).
But oh! When a slice of cake *is* jab-worthy, it is a beautiful thing. It has the ability to lift the mood of the whole day – turning a cup of tea and a treat into an Event, bringing people together around a table to ooh and aah and murmur contentedly, fingers picking up any stray crumbs… what a delight.
A slice of cake can be a total slice of joy. A bright and delicious glimmer in a dark day.
I had a slice of cake like that today and oh my goodness, friends, if only I could teleport a slice of it to you! Orange, bay and blackberry cake with vanilla and orange French buttercream, by the inimitable @mondvol_soet. Delicious and surprising and creamy and crumbly and all the adjectives, all rolled into one.
I’ve just realized that today is 3 years since I published The Grief Handbook so this is my book’s 3 year birthday cake!
The best part? I have another slice to look forward to tomorrow! And the next day, if I’m lucky and find a good hiding place 😜
What about you? Cake yay or nay? And if nay, what treat do you celebrate with? I love celebrating. Celebrate everything, I say! Even a rainy Saturday afternoon.
