Let’s talk about the gift of food.
Oh my goodness, but I love eating. I look forward to every meal and can regularly be transported by a bite of something delicious…
In The Grief Handbook, I talk about slices of joy, and how – even on the hardest days – we can find a moment of joy. So often, these moments are food-related for me: a spoonful of cold, creamy yoghurt, that first sip of tea in the morning, the crunch of cucumber and burst of tomato, a comforting mouthful of lasagna. This week has been intense, but in the midst of the intensity there have been slices of delicious joy – kiwi fruit! Mint Lindor chocolate! Icy lemon gin and soda! And this beauty of a choc chip banana bread, gifted to me by a friend.
My dad has turned a corner and is doing so much better today. The world feels like it has exhaled and I can breathe freely again. And I just had a slice of fresh banana bread and a cup of tea. What more could anyone ask for?
