My new favourite flower: larkspurs

I have a new favourite flower! The larkspur. As lovely a name as its bright blue and lavender flowers…

I picked these beauties myself (which feels somewhat miraculous to me) at the beautiful @jamestownflowerfarm on Tuesday morning (Tuesday morning! Similarly miraculous) with my lovely friend @athena77turner.

We ambled and chatted and picked flowers and ate berries on the shady banks of the river. It was such a special few hours… Followed by what felt like a tidal wave of work 🌊

But what I am slowly recognizing is that work is like the ocean. Vast and endless, with waves of deadlines that sometimes come crashing down – and pauses (like Tuesday morning flower picking) that let you rest on the beach before diving back in.

It can feel ridiculous to block out a few hours for friendship or long walks or self-care when the To Do List is insanely long, but actually isn’t it ridiculous not to? We are never going to conquer the ocean: work will never be done.

And so, in the immortal words of the Desiderata:
“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.”

Let’s pepper our days with moments of silence and slices of joy, recognizing that they fuel us for the long swims through the endless waves of work 😆
