A tale of 3 covers 📚
When I was 25, I published a (sweet, strange) novel called Strange Nervous Laughter. It’s a love song to Durban, my hometown, and the cover was designed by Disturbance (@roger_jardine_photography and @richardhartstudio) – Durban’s coolest design agency.
The cover is me, at 25, on the Durban beachfront in the early morning, with a special font designed just for me (and glittered!). I could not love it more.
Just as my book was published, I got my first full-time job, as features writer at Real Simple magazine in Cape Town (@real_simple !!) but resigned after less than a year because I’d just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and just published my novel and was trying to figure out my life. They made me this amazing blockmounted cover, which I have kept for 17 years (!) and now sits on my desk.
And finally, when we were packing up to renovate I found this old poster which must have been from my book launch. My daughter loved it, so I laminated it for her and it now hangs in her cupboard.
One day, 18 years ago, immortalized in 3 ways… A slice of joy every time I look at it.
